  • Heart Health

Heart Disease in the United States (CDC)

    • About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.1
    • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in men.1
    • Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, killing over 370,000 people annually.1
    • Every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 525,000 are a first heart attack and 210,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack.2

Cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, arrhythmias and others are serious conditions among the leading causes of death in the country. But despite the life-threatening complications associated with these diseases, many of them can be prevented through lifestyle changes or screening exams performed by an experienced professional.

Since symptoms of heart disease can occur suddenly with no warning, screening is recommended to detect early signs of these conditions, especially for patients with certain risk factors. Common risk factors for cardiovascular disease include:

    • Family history of coronary artery disease
    • High cholesterol
    • History of smoking
    • High blood pressure
    • Diabetes

Early detection of cardiovascular diseases can be the difference between life and death for many patients. Routine screening and healthy lifestyle changes can often help patients prevent serious heart conditions from developing.

At Island Medical Consultants, we provide comprehensive cardiovascular screening exams performed by American Board of Internal Medicine Certified physicians with over 30 years of combined experience. Dr. Tariq is committed to the health and well-being of each and every patient, and provide valuable screening services for those at risk for these serious conditions.

    EKG

An electrocardiogram or EKG is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart. It translates heart activity it into waves on paper.. It is often performed after as part of a routine screening for heart disease or for patients who have experienced chest pain, shortness of breath and other heart attack symptoms. An EKG can be used to determine:

    • The cause of chest pain or other heart disease symptoms
    • How well heart medications are working
    • If the walls of the heart are too thick
    • How well mechanical devices such as pacemakers are working
    • Check the overall health of the heart that is affected by other diseases

The test will be performed in the office.  The machine will trace your heart activity onto paper. The abnormal results from an EKG may indicate signs of a heart condition, which should be further investigated.

    High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a common and dangerous condition. Having high blood pressure means the pressure of the blood in your blood vessels is higher than it should be. But you can take steps to control your blood pressure and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke.

About 1 of 3 U.S. adults—or about 75 million people—have high blood pressure.1 Only about half (54%) of these people have their high blood pressure under control.1 This common condition increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, 2 of the leading causes of death for Americans.2 Get more quick facts about high blood pressure, or learn more about high blood pressure in the United States.

High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because it often has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people do not know they have it. That’s why it is important to check your blood pressure regularly.

The good news is that you can take steps to prevent high blood pressure or to control it if your blood pressure is already high.
